Open Day 8th June 2008
14:00 - 19:00 hrs
Last year on 1st June we held our first Open Day. We are very proud to say it was a huge success and are extremely grateful for the voluntary help and support we received from friends and clients. Even the weather was kind to us on the day which gave the afternoon a perfect mix of cloud and sunshine, and kept the temperature comfortable for both dogs and humans alike.
We were overwhelmed by the number of people and dogs that made the effort to attend. At one point I went back to the house only to discover that not only were all the allocated parking areas completely full, but the road outside was also full of parked cars.
The event was opened with a country band “The Gerry Atrix”, who entertained us through the afternoon with their fun, but very talented, approach to music.
The first of two displays given by the owners and their dogs of the various training classes run by Joy (the trainer based at the kennels) was at 3pm. Joy was also on hand to give advice and offer a free training session for all to have a go. Along with Barbara from the local cattery displaying her newly created outside runs; was Lizzie introducing some of her Whippet dogs that are shown and worked throughout France and Europe.
As well as the kennel doors being thrown open for general viewing, all the stalls including Les’ pet accessory stall, Elaine’s gift stall, Simon’s cheese stall and the refreshments tent proved to be very popular. Not to mention the fun stalls, games and raffles which had lots of interest helping to raise over 200€ for the SPA and the Phoenix Animal Rescue.
The afternoon was rounded off with the fun Dog Show, which Lizzie very kindly offered to be our judge for the day. Rosettes went to the Scruffiest Dog, Waggiest Tail, Best 6 Legs, the Biscuit Catching Competition (which ended with a tie), followed by a very exciting “Chase me Charlie”.
The Grand Finale was the prize draw and presentation of prizes. Congratulations to Thierry Labracherie and Mr Chisholm winners of the two top prizes of champagne, wine and cooler set generously donated by Le Roc du Boeuf and a meal for two kindly donated by La Meteorite restaurant.
One final thing is to say a huge thanks to all who attended, gave generously and made the event possible. To the many voluntary helpers, you know who you are - especially Elaine, Dave and Joy who worked solidly for six weeks helping Les and I put it all together. Natalie, who worked like a Trojan all day, looking after the boarded dogs, the stallholders who also donated generous prizes and the brilliant band “The Gerry Atrix”. Last but not least - the owners and dogs that gave up their training hours to create a fantastic display of basic dog obedience and dancing, which I hope inspired you, as it has me.
We look forward to seeing you and many morein 2008!!!!!!
